Katrina Lake founded Stitch Fix in 2011. At the time, she was completing her MBA at Harvard Business School. She shipped the very first order out of her Cambridge apartment. She packed each box herself before the business grew into a national operation.
Katrina Lake built the company around one simple idea. She wanted to blend human styling expertise with data science. This combination would help people find clothes that truly fit their lives. So, Stitch Fix pairs algorithmic recommendations with real human stylists. These stylists curate personalized clothing boxes called “Fixes.” Each box reflects a client’s style profile, feedback, and preferences. Customers simply keep what they like and return the rest. Meanwhile, the company’s machine-learning systems get smarter about individual taste over time.
This model quickly set Stitch Fix apart from competitors. Unlike purely algorithm-driven services, it kept a human touch. Unlike traditional styling services, it scaled through smart technology. As a result, the approach became core to the company’s identity.
In 2017, Lake took Stitch Fix public. She became the youngest woman ever to lead a company through an IPO. Afterward, the business expanded significantly. It grew into men’s, kids’, and plus-size offerings. Eventually, Stitch Fix served millions of active clients across the US and UK.
However, growth has since slowed from its peak. Additionally, leadership has changed hands several times over the years. Lake served as CEO until 2021, then became executive chairperson. In 2023, she returned as interim CEO to help stabilize declining sales. Today, she serves on the company’s board instead.
Despite these shifts, her original vision remains intact. Stitch Fix still stands as a widely cited example. It shows how data science can solve deeply personal problems. Ultimately, Katrina Lake helped people feel confident in what they wear, and that mission continues today.
